In an effort to enhance scientific and applied cooperation between the Consulting Office at the College of Agriculture, University of Basra, and international companies and national institutions, the office conducted a detailed laboratory and field study for the Canadian company RSK, contracted by Basra Gas Company (BGC), the Ministry of Oil, and Shell Oil Company. The study aimed to analyze and test the sulfur components associated with oil flares in southern Iraqi oil fields.
The study focused on conducting a series of advanced laboratory analyses to determine the nature of the sulfur compounds resulting from oil combustion processes and assess their environmental impact. It also explored the possibility of converting these compounds from a toxic and hazardous element into a mineral compound suitable for agricultural use as a fertilizer, thereby contributing to reducing polluting emissions and optimizing the utilization of oil waste.
A specialized scientific team of professors and researchers from the College of Agriculture, specializing in soil science, agricultural chemistry, and environmental science, participated in the study. They utilized precise analytical equipment and internationally recognized techniques to ensure the accuracy of the results and their compliance with global environmental standards.
The Dean of the College of Agriculture affirmed that this study represents a qualitative addition to the field of applied environmental research and embodies the university's role in supporting the state's efforts toward achieving sustainable development and environmental protection. He pointed out that cooperation with international companies enhances the College of Agriculture's standing as a scientific institution capable of providing practical solutions to environmental and industrial problems in the country.
For their part, the Canadian company RSK and Basra Gas Company commended the scientific and professional efforts exerted by the College of Agriculture's staff, praising the quality of the work, the accuracy of the analyses, and the innovative sustainable environmental solutions presented by the research team.
